Building a cancer prevention plan isn’t just about policy; it’s about culture, consistency, and accountability. Here’s where to start:
1. Establish a Gear Cleaning Protocol
Your turnout gear is your first line of defense—but it’s also a sponge for dangerous chemicals, including PFAS and other carcinogens. Make routine advanced decontamination part of your department’s standard operating procedures. The longer the gear goes uncleaned, the higher the exposure risk.
2. Prioritize Post-Fire Hygiene
Immediate on-scene decon, showering within an hour of returning to the station, and changing into clean uniforms should be non-negotiable. Equip rigs and stations with wipes, spare clothing, and designated dirty zones to limit cross-contamination.

Many firefighters are unaware of just how much exposure happens after the fire is out. Make cancer education part of your training curriculum. Knowledge reduces resistance—and helps build buy-in across every rank.
4. Track Gear Lifecycle and Condition
